13th Commonwealth Table Tennis
Championships 1997
(Glasgow, Scotland)
It was duly noted that for the second time Hong Kong teams were absent. In 1975, for the 3rd event held in Australia, they were not present. The women's team returned home in 1982 because of the racket controversy when their #1 player had her racket rejected because it did not meet ITTF Rule approved for Jannuary 1, 1982.
The highlights of the 13th event emanated for the women from Singapore who won the team event, lead by Jing Junhong, Tan Paey Fern and Koh Li Ping. Jing Junhong also won Singles gold, as well as Doubles with Li Jiawei, who in turn with partner Lai Chin Pang, won the Mixed Doubles; Li Jiawei tied for bronze medal of Women's Singles with Andrea Holt (ENG).
Other teams in women's team event were silver to England; bronze 3rd Australia, 4th Malaysia.
